In a quiet townhouse community in South Plainfield, New Jersey, a tragic and unexpected act of violence shattered the peace of a family. Bindu Brahmbhatt, a 72-year-old woman of Indian descent, was fatally shot in her home on Coppola Drive. The incident, which occurred on the morning of November 27, 2023, also claimed the lives of her 72-year-old husband, Dilipkumar Brahmbhatt, and their 38-year-old son, Yashkumar Brahmbhatt. Police were dispatched to the 'Traditions' condominium complex around 9 a.m. after receiving a report of shots fired.
Upon arrival, law enforcement officers discovered a grim scene. Bindu and Dilipkumar Brahmbhatt were found deceased inside the residence, both having suffered gunshot wounds. Their son, Yashkumar, was found with multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The quiet suburban neighborhood was suddenly thrust into the center of a homicide investigation as police worked to piece together the events that led to the triple fatality. The initial investigation quickly determined that the act was not random and that there was no ongoing threat to the public.
Living in the same home was 23-year-old Om Brahmbhatt, the grandson of Bindu and Dilipkumar, and the nephew of Yashkumar. He was present at the scene when police arrived. Following an investigation, Om Brahmbhatt was arrested without incident and charged with three counts of first-degree murder and weapons offenses in connection with the killings. Authorities reported that Om Brahmbhatt himself had called 911. When officers questioned him about who was responsible for the shootings, he reportedly responded, 'It might be me.'
Subsequent court filings revealed more disturbing details about the case. Om Brahmbhatt allegedly confessed to the shootings, stating that he had purchased the handgun used in the crime online. According to the complaint, he admitted to shooting his grandparents while they were asleep in their bedroom before proceeding to shoot his uncle in another room. Om Brahmbhatt was taken into custody and is being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center pending further legal proceedings. During his initial court appearance, he was reported to have a calm demeanor.
