In the late hours of a Friday night, the life of 33-year-old Logan Gonzalez of Union City was cut short in a residence in Paterson, New Jersey. On February 16, 2024, at approximately 10:42 p.m., a witness alerted Paterson Police Department patrol units to a shooting that had occurred inside a home near the intersection of East 21st Street and 19th Avenue.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered Gonzalez with a gunshot wound to his lower back. He was rushed by ambulance to Saint Joseph's University Medical Center, but his injury proved fatal, and he was pronounced deceased. The subsequent investigation into the homicide quickly pointed to a single suspect.
Authorities identified 46-year-old Paterson resident Alexander Gutierrez as the individual responsible for the shooting. The investigation revealed that Gutierrez had been in possession of a revolver and had shot Gonzalez.
He was subsequently arrested and is facing multiple charges, including first-degree murder, second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun, and second-degree possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose.
Following his arrest, the state announced its intention to file a motion for pretrial detention for Gutierrez. The murder charge carries a potential sentence of 30 years to life in prison, while the weapons charges each carry a sentence of five to ten years.
