On May 9, 2023, at approximately 10:08 p.m., the Tazewell County 911 Center received a call reporting a shooting at a residence on Pounding Mill Branch Road in Pounding Mill, Virginia. Upon arrival, deputies discovered 46-year-old Eric Lockhart with a gunshot wound to the chest inside his home, which he shared with his wife and family. Emergency Medical Services transported Lockhart to Carilion Tazewell Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
