On August 24, 2023, 19-year-old Matthew Gibbs, a freshman at Virginia State University (VSU), was found with a gunshot wound near Walnut Hill Elementary School in Petersburg, Virginia. Emergency responders transported him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
