In the late summer hours of August 28th, the life of 22-year-old Mijal Conejero-Romera, a female resident of Sterling, Virginia, was tragically cut short. She and her boyfriend, Diego Alexander Woollett, also 22, were in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Ridgetop Circle when an argument escalated into deadly violence. Both were shot and, despite being rushed to a local hospital, succumbed to their injuries.
For nearly two months, friends and family mourned and anxiously awaited
answers, fearing the case would go unsolved. Conejero-Romera was remembered by friends as a vibrant person who could light up a room with her smile and voice. She was deeply family-oriented, working hard to support her parents. She and Woollett, who met as coworkers at Amazon, were described as a happy couple.
In late October, a significant breakthrough occurred in the investigation. Authorities arrested 18-year-old Marlyn Medrano-Ortiz of Alexandria in connection with the double homicide. Officers from the Alexandria Police Department recognized him from a law enforcement bulletin. The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office has identified Medrano-Ortiz as a member of the MS-13 gang, though they have stated that neither Conejero-Romera nor Woollett had any gang affiliation.
Medrano-Ortiz has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, with the possibility of additional charges as the investigation continues. The arrest brought a measure of relief to a community shaken by the senseless act of violence. While a motive has not been publicly detailed, authorities have mentioned that the shooting followed an altercation. The suspect is scheduled to appear in court in December.
