The life of Darryl James McFadden Holloway, a 41-year-old Black man, was cut short on the evening of Monday, March 27, 2023, in Orangeburg, South Carolina. Deputies with the Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office responded to a call at a home on Muriel Street, where they discovered Holloway unresponsive on the porch. He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
The sheriff's office immediately began a homicide investigation.
Sheriff Leroy Ravenell described the case as a "non-stop investigation" to find the person responsible for the "senseless, senseless shooting." He expressed confidence in his department's ability to bring suspects to justice, stating, "For some reason, these individuals think they are smarter than the last guy who was caught. This shows them to be wrong. Again."
Within a week, the investigation led to an arrest. On Monday, April 3, 2023, deputies took 31-year-old Marion Aiken Jr., an Orangeburg resident, into custody. He was subsequently charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime in connection with Darryl Holloway's death.
Court documents revealed that investigators had obtained a statement from a witness to the shooting, along with audio and video recordings related to the incident. Aiken was arraigned on Tuesday, April 4, 2023. As of April 2023, the case was moving forward in the judicial system.
