On a Tuesday morning in Florence, South Carolina, the life of Bobby Antoine McKenzie, a 36-year-old Black male, was tragically cut short. On September 12, 2023, McKenzie was discovered inside a vehicle in the parking lot of a hotel on Radio Drive, suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency responders rushed him to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal.
The investigation into the death of McKenzie, who was from the New Zion community, quickly led to arrests.
Authorities charged two individuals, 22-year-old Iyana Camille Davis of Lake City and 21-year-old Nicholas Daishawn Jones of Scranton, in connection with the homicide. The charges against them included murder, armed robbery, and criminal conspiracy. Jones faced an additional charge for possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. According to the arrest warrants, the motive behind this violent act was a planned robbery. The individuals had intended to rob McKenzie of his necklaces, and when they were unable to secure a hotel room for the crime, they confronted him in the parking lot where the fatal shooting occurred.
A third suspect was later apprehended in connection to the case. On October 11, 2023, the Florence Police Department arrested Avery Jaquan Harrison. He is facing charges of murder, armed robbery, and criminal conspiracy for his alleged involvement in the events that led to McKenzie's death. The case has moved to the courts to determine the guilt or innocence of the three individuals charged in this deadly encounter.
