In the quiet community of Beaufort, South Carolina, a domestic dispute escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of a young child. Three-year-old Ariana Skylar Fair, a girl whose life had just begun, was fatally shot on Sunday, October 1, 2023, during a child custody exchange. The incident unfolded in the parking lot of the Cross Creek Apartments, where gunfire erupted following a dispute.
First responders arrived at the scene shortly after 12:30 p.m.
to find a 26-year-old woman, Ariana's mother, with serious injuries. Soon after, law enforcement was alerted to two other gunshot victims who had been taken to a local hospital: a 25-year-old male with non-life-threatening injuries and young Ariana, who had sustained life-threatening injuries. Despite medical efforts, Ariana succumbed to her injuries at Beaufort Memorial Hospital. An autopsy later confirmed that a gunshot wound was the cause of her death.
In the wake of the shooting, investigators identified Ariana's father, 27-year-old Jonathan Tyleke Fair, as the primary suspect. Warrants were issued for his arrest on charges of murder, two counts of attempted murder, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. After being actively sought by law enforcement, Fair turned himself in to the City of Beaufort Police on October 16, 2023.
Jonathan Tyleke Fair was subsequently booked into the Beaufort County Jail. In addition to the initial charges, he also faced counts of unlawful neglect of a child, aggravated breach of peace, a probation and parole violation, and discharging a firearm as a prohibited person. The charges stemmed not only from the shooting itself but also from his alleged failure to render aid to the victims after the incident.
