In the quiet community of Aiken, South Carolina, the life of 46-year-old Kenneth Joseph Jones was abruptly ended on Halloween morning, October 31, 2023. A Black male, Jones was found shot multiple times in the front yard of an abandoned home near the intersection of Sumter Street and Sundy Avenue. The Aiken Department of Public Safety responded to a call about the shooting at approximately 9:45 a.m. and discovered Jones lying on the ground.
Despite the efforts of officers and emergency medical services, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the death of Kenneth Jones led authorities to a suspect months later. On April 16, 2024, 20-year-old Jemaurea Johnson was arrested and charged with murder in connection with the fatal shooting. Law enforcement officials have indicated that further arrests are anticipated as the investigation continues.
Jemaurea Johnson was no stranger to law enforcement. Prior to the murder charge, he had a criminal record that included a 2022 arrest for two counts of attempted murder. In that case, the attempted murder charges were ultimately dismissed, and he pleaded guilty to lesser offenses of discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle and unlawful carrying of a pistol. For those charges, he was sentenced to three years in prison but was released early. Following his release, Johnson was arrested on separate occasions in early 2024 for a range of offenses, including fleeing from police, theft by receiving stolen property, and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. Reports also suggest that a gun found in his possession during one of these arrests was linked to the murder of Kenneth Jones.
