A tragic turn of events on a summer night in Columbia, South Carolina, led to the death of 32-year-old Eugene Bell Jr. on August 17, 2024. The incident unfolded around midnight in the 1200 block of King Street, where a heated verbal exchange would ultimately have fatal consequences for the young man.
According to police reports, Bell’s cousin, Tamara L. Anderson, 39, was engaged in an argument with another person. As the dispute escalated, Anderson allegedly produced a handgun.
In an attempt to de-escalate the situation and act as a peacemaker, Eugene Bell Jr. stepped in to intervene. It was during this heroic act that the firearm discharged, and Bell was struck by the bullet. Emergency services were called to the scene, but tragically, Bell was pronounced dead from the gunshot wound.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Columbia Police Department launched an investigation. After consulting with the 5th Circuit Solicitor's Office, Tamara L. Anderson was taken into custody. She was subsequently charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of her cousin. Following her arrest, Anderson was transported to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
Anderson has since been released from custody after a judge set her bond at $100,000, which she secured through a personal recognizance bond. The case is now set to proceed through the legal system to determine the final outcome of the unfortunate and fatal incident that cut short the life of Eugene Bell Jr.
