In the quiet community of Dalzell, South Carolina, a tragic event unfolded on the evening of September 3, 2024, ending the life of 16-year-old Jayvion Jones, a male resident of Hampton, Georgia. Jones was one of six juveniles inside a vehicle when it was targeted by gunfire. The shooting occurred at the intersection of Black River Road and Edens Road, where authorities later discovered Jones's body inside the car around 8:30 p.m.
Another 16-year-old in the vehicle was also wounded in the attack but was expected to make a full recovery.
The investigation into the shooting led the Sumter County Sheriff's Office to identify two suspects. The first, 17-year-old Jonathan Brown of Dalzell, was arrested on September 11. A search of his home uncovered fentanyl and a stolen firearm. Initially arrested on drug and weapons charges, Brown was later charged with the murder of Jayvion Jones, five counts of attempted murder, discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle, possession of a stolen pistol, possession of a firearm by a person under 18, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
Further investigation resulted in a second arrest on September 27. Henry Jahlil Brown, 19, of Sumter, was also charged with murder and five counts of attempted murder in connection with the incident. He also faces charges of discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Both Jonathan Brown and Henry Jahlil Brown were taken to the Sumter County Sheriff's Office Detention Center. While arrests have been made, the motive for the shooting has not been publicly released. The investigation remains ongoing.
