In the late hours of an autumn evening in Beaufort, South Carolina, the lives of two teenagers were tragically cut short in a wave of violence. On October 23, 2024, 18-year-old Ashi Mitchell was fatally wounded in a shooting that erupted near the intersection of Parris Island Gateway and Trask Parkway in the Burton area. Another young man, 18-year-old DaRhon Brooks, was also killed in the violent encounter, while a third individual in their vehicle sustained injuries.
Following the burst
of gunfire around 10:20 p.m., a frantic effort to reach Beaufort Memorial Hospital began. However, this desperate drive for help ended in further tragedy. About three miles from the scene of the shooting, on Ribaut Road, their vehicle crashed and was quickly engulfed in flames. First responders arriving at the fiery wreck discovered the devastating outcome of the preceding violence. The Beaufort County Coroner's Office later confirmed that both Ashi Mitchell and DaRhon Brooks had died as a result of gunshot wounds.
In the wake of the double homicide, the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation into the shooting. Authorities canvassed the intersection where the shots were fired, marking and collecting evidence such as shell casings in an effort to piece together the events of that fatal night. Despite these efforts and public appeals for information, as of early January 2025, no arrests had been made in connection with the murders of Ashi Mitchell and DaRhon Brooks. The case remains an open investigation, leaving a community to mourn the loss of two young lives and to await answers and justice.
