On October 23, 2024, 18-year-old Ashi Akeed Mitchell of Beaufort, South Carolina, tragically lost his life in a shooting incident near the intersection of Parris Island Gateway and Trask Parkway in Burton. Mitchell, along with fellow 18-year-old Beaufort resident DaRhon Brooks, was fatally wounded when their vehicle came under gunfire around 10:20 p.m. A third occupant in the vehicle sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
