On January 16, 2023, 23-year-old Javon L. Carpenter of Summit, Mississippi, was fatally shot while riding a side-by-side ATV with Travis Williams on Sims Thornhill Road, just north of Tylertown. The incident occurred around 3 p.m. Carpenter was airlifted to Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Williams sustained injuries from the shooting and was transported to the same hospital by ambulance.
