In the spring of 2023, the life of a young man was tragically cut short in a burst of violence that unfolded at a gas station in Gautier, Mississippi. Maurice Latrell Shannon Jr., a 20-year-old Black male, was fatally shot on the afternoon of April 3, 2023. The incident, which took place at the Pure gas station on Ladnier Road, sent ripples of shock and grief through the community. Shannon was pronounced dead at the scene before law enforcement officers arrived.
An autopsy was later scheduled to be performed.
The Gautier Police Department quickly launched an investigation into the homicide and identified a primary suspect, Thomas Guy Rogers, also known as 'Woody,' from the Mobile, Alabama area. A warrant for murder was issued for the 27-year-old, who was considered armed and dangerous. Investigators believed Rogers had fled back to Mobile following the shooting and was last seen in a white 2019 Honda Accord. The search for Rogers involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, and the Mobile County Sheriff's Office.
Following a manhunt, Thomas Guy Rogers was apprehended in Mobile, Alabama. He was taken into custody and held at the Mobile Metro Jail, awaiting extradition back to Mississippi to face charges. The investigation also led to the arrest of another individual in connection with the fatal shooting. Iesha Finley, a 21-year-old from Gautier, was arrested in Brookhaven on a charge of accessory after the fact. Authorities believe that Finley and Rogers were in a dating relationship.
