In the late afternoon of April 25, 2023, a dispute between family members in a rural area near Durant, Mississippi, escalated into a tragedy that ended two lives. The incident, which was broadcast on Facebook Live, claimed the life of 33-year-old Karissa Job.
Earlier that day, Job and her 24-year-old cousin, Tiateiyuna Day, traveled to a residence on Emory Road, situated north of West, Mississippi.
Their purpose was to confront another woman, who was also reportedly a relative, at her home. The ensuing argument on the property was captured on a live-streaming video, which showed Job and Day verbally taunting and provoking the female resident. The disagreement is said to have stemmed from issues surrounding a grandmother's property where the resident was living.
As the confrontation intensified, the resident of the home emerged with a firearm. Despite the presence of the weapon and verbal warnings, the heated exchange continued. The situation took a deadly turn when the resident discharged her weapon, fatally shooting both Karissa Job and Tiateiyuna Day. Day was pronounced dead at the scene, while Job succumbed to her injuries while en route to a local hospital.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Holmes County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation. Sheriff Willie March publicly commented on the incident, noting the tragic and avoidable nature of the deaths. He indicated that the shooting could potentially be considered an act of self-defense, as Job and Day were the aggressors who had come to the shooter's home and initiated the confrontation. The Facebook Live video became a crucial piece of evidence for investigators. As of the latest reports, the resident who fired the shots has been questioned, but no criminal charges have been filed. Authorities are continuing to review the video footage and the circumstances surrounding the incident to determine if the case will be presented to a grand jury.
