In the small town of Alligator, Mississippi, a burst of violence on the afternoon of May 31, 2023, ended the life of 23-year-old Antwon Scott. A Black male, Scott was at an apartment complex on Burchfield Road around noon when he was shot multiple times. The severity of his injuries required him to be airlifted to a hospital in Memphis for urgent medical care.
Despite the efforts to save him, Antwon Scott succumbed to his wounds during the flight.
The incident quickly launched an investigation by local law enforcement, who identified 19-year-old Curtis Nawls, also from Alligator, as the suspect in the fatal shooting. In a significant development in the case, a suspect later surrendered to the authorities. The community was left shaken by the violent loss of the young man, who was remembered by loved ones for his great personality. Funeral services were held on June 17, 2023, at Damascus M.B. Church in Clarksdale, followed by his burial at McLaurin Gardens Cemetery in Lyon.
