A night out with friends took a tragic turn for 21-year-old Ayairia Anderson, a pregnant woman from Jackson, Mississippi. In the early morning hours of June 11, 2023, what began as a social gathering at a local restaurant and bar ended in a senseless act of gun violence that claimed two lives.
Anderson was eight months pregnant with her first child, a son she had named Jadari Jakai Davis. After a fight reportedly broke out at the establishment, Anderson and her friends left in her black Nissan Altima. As she was driving near Interstate 220 on Industrial Park Drive, she was struck by gunfire, suffering wounds to her head and leg. Her friends, who were with her, asserted that she was caught in the crossfire. The gunshots caused her to lose control of her vehicle and crash into an overpass.
Her friends desperately tried to keep her alive until paramedics arrived. Anderson was rushed to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where doctors performed an emergency C-section in an attempt to save her baby. Tragically, neither Ayairia nor her unborn son survived. The Jackson Police Department is investigating the case as a double homicide.
In the wake of the shooting, two brothers, Jashantes and Jamarquez McClendon, were arrested. They face multiple charges, including two counts of murder, shooting into an occupied vehicle, and drive-by shooting. During a court appearance, the attorney for one of the brothers maintained their innocence, stating that they were in separate vehicles and did not possess the type of weapon used in the shooting. Despite this, a judge denied bond for both suspects. The family of Ayairia Anderson continues to grieve the profound loss of a young mother and her unborn child, vowing not to let her case go cold.
