John Allen Gaither, a 42-year-old male, met a tragic and disturbing end in Gulfport, Mississippi. His death, which occurred on December 10, 2023, was the result of a gunshot wound to the back of his head. The circumstances surrounding his demise remained hidden for weeks, obscured by a web of deceit spun by the person closest to him.
The investigation into Gaither's whereabouts began after concerned family members reported him missing, noting that it was highly unusual for him to be out
of contact. When police initiated a welfare check on December 22, 2023, they were met with inconsistencies and changing stories from his mother, Jerri Lynn Roby. As the investigation progressed, Roby, who has also used the surname Isreal, became increasingly uncooperative with law enforcement.
A significant breakthrough in the case came when detectives discovered Roby's past criminal record, which included a manslaughter conviction in Florida. This discovery, coupled with her suspicious behavior, led police to obtain a search warrant for her home. On January 18, 2024, their search uncovered a gruesome scene. Gaither's body was found concealed inside a handmade wooden box that had been hidden behind a false wall within the residence.
Following the discovery of her son's body, Jerri Lynn Roby was arrested on January 20, 2024, and subsequently charged with first-degree murder. During the course of their investigation, police learned that Roby had allegedly attempted to mislead Gaither's family by sending them forged letters and text messages from his phone to create the illusion that he was still alive. An 86-year-old man, Robert Wayne Tannehill, was also arrested and charged with hindering the prosecution in connection with the case.
