On a tragic Friday night in December 2023, a party in the Hannah Heights area of Ethel, Mississippi, turned into a scene of violence that claimed the life of 42-year-old Martell Jackson. The gathering, attended by people from Attala, Leake, and Holmes counties, was shattered by the sound of gunfire when one or more groups began shooting. In the chaos that ensued, at least three individuals were injured and rushed to Baptist Attala hospital for treatment.
For Martell Jackson, a resident
of Ethel, the injuries proved to be fatal. He was pronounced dead at the hospital by the Attala County Coroner, Sam Bell, who ordered an autopsy to be performed. The Attala County Sheriff's Office immediately launched a homicide investigation into the shooting, with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation providing assistance.
In the days following the incident, law enforcement officials worked to piece together the events of that night. The outgoing sheriff, Tim Nail, revealed that an argument may have precipitated the shooting. Investigators identified a suspect, but locating and apprehending them proved to be a challenge. A vehicle possibly connected to the crime was recovered and sent to the State Crime Lab for analysis. As the year came to a close, the investigation was handed over to the newly elected Sheriff-Elect Curtis Pope to continue the pursuit of justice for Martell Jackson.
