In the winter of 2024, the life of 23-year-old Anthony 'DJ Choo' Wayne Davis, II, was tragically cut short in Jackson, Mississippi. On the evening of January 29th, Davis was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire of a moving shootout. The incident occurred near North State Street and Cedars of Lebanon Drive, where individuals in two separate vehicles began firing at each other. Davis, who was simply driving in the area, was struck and killed during the exchange.
Remembered as a local DJ, his sudden death sent ripples through the community.
The investigation into the senseless killing led Jackson police to identify four suspects. In the months that followed, authorities began to close in on those they believed were responsible for the young man's death. Two individuals, Malik Ray and Cortez George, were taken into custody in connection with the fatal shooting. A third suspect, Martraius Douglas, was later apprehended by police. Douglas was already out on bond for a separate capital murder charge at the time of his arrest.
The search for the fourth and final suspect, identified as Aiden Maya, continues as he remains at large with an active warrant for capital murder. Of the suspects arrested, Malik Ray, who was 20 years old at the time, appeared in court for a preliminary hearing where a judge denied him bond, labeling him a danger to the community. The cases against the apprehended suspects are moving through the legal system as the city mourns the loss of a vibrant young life taken too soon.
