In the quiet city of Yazoo City, Mississippi, a tragedy unfolded that cut short the life of Sherrelle Bassett, a 34-year-old Black mother of two. On the evening of April 28, 2024, officers from the Yazoo City Police Department were dispatched to a residence to conduct a welfare check. What they discovered inside would send a ripple of shock and grief through the community.
Upon entering the home, police found Sherrelle Bassett deceased, having suffered from multiple gunshot wounds.
Alongside her was Ravonte Fowler, who was also deceased from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The initial investigation led law enforcement to believe that Fowler had shot and killed Bassett before taking his own life in an apparent murder-suicide.
