On a summer evening, what was meant to be a pleasant date night for a young couple turned into a tragedy that left a family shattered and a community in shock. Twenty-eight-year-old Shelly Pettaway, a Black mother of three with another child on the way, was out with her boyfriend in Inkster, Michigan, on July 30, 2023. The two were enjoying their time together, unaware of the violence that would soon befall them.
Later that evening, both Pettaway and her boyfriend were discovered inside their car, having been fatally shot. The discovery of their bodies sent ripples of grief through their families and the local community. Pettaway, who was also known by the nickname 'Shel Bell,' was remembered as a loving mother whose life was tragically cut short. Her unborn child, what would have been her fourth, also perished in the senseless act of violence.
In the wake of the double homicide, the investigation fell to the Michigan State Police. Despite the efforts of law enforcement, the case has remained unsolved. As of the one-year anniversary of the tragic event, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The lack of closure has been a source of ongoing pain for Pettaway's loved ones, who continue to seek justice for her and her unborn child. The community remains hopeful that those responsible for this devastating crime will one day be brought to answer for their actions.
