In the early hours of Father's Day, June 16, 2024, the life of 25-year-old Daquan L. Mims was tragically cut short in Saginaw, Michigan. The incident unfolded shortly before 2 a.m. in the Old Town district, a historic area known for its nightlife. As bars in the neighborhood closed, a large and disorderly crowd lingered on North Hamilton Street. Two Saginaw police officers, already in the area responding to reports of the large gatherings, heard the distinct sound of gunfire erupting just a few blocks away.
Responding to the sound, officers discovered a chaotic scene in front of a West Side party store. Amid the crowd, they found Daquan Mims suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Dozens of people were in close proximity when the shooting occurred. Emergency services were called, and Mims was quickly transported to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead. Another man was also injured in the shooting.
Known to his loved ones as 'Juug' and 'Our Gentle Giant,' Mims was a beloved son, husband, and father. He had attended Saginaw High School and was employed at Bay Area Forklift. Family was paramount to him; he was married to his wife, Alexia, and was a father to seven children. Those who knew him described him as a kind and loving person with a penchant for making people laugh. His interests included fishing, boxing, and spending time at the casino, but his greatest joy was the time he spent with his wife and children.
In the months following the shooting, investigators worked diligently to bring justice for Mims. Utilizing surveillance footage from the area, authorities were able to develop a description of the individual responsible for the gunfire. On September 24, 2024, the Saginaw Police Department publicly identified 26-year-old Shavar Craft as the suspect in the shooting death of Daquan Mims. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and police have asked for the public's assistance in locating him.
