In the early hours of July 9, 2024, the life of 31-year-old Equayvis S. “Quay” Moten, a Black/African American male, was cut short in a fatal shooting in Saginaw, Michigan. The incident, which marked the city's 13th homicide of the year, unfolded around 12:45 a.m. in the 3300 block of Ruckle Street. Responding to reports of gunfire, Saginaw police discovered Moten in a driveway with at least one gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The events leading to the fatal encounter began earlier in the evening when Moten, a father of six, encountered a woman he had previously dated at a local party store. A subsequent invitation for her current boyfriend, Eric M. Wills II, to her home set the stage for a tragic confrontation. Tensions escalated when Moten arrived, exhibiting aggressive behavior and making hostile remarks. A scuffle ensued, during which Wills brandished a pistol. An unarmed Moten was shot multiple times, sustaining wounds to his left arm, chest, and abdomen.
In the aftermath of the shooting, authorities apprehended a suspect later that same evening. While the suspect's identity was not immediately released by law enforcement, later reports identified Eric M. Wills II as the individual involved. Investigators found three 9mm casings at the scene, though the firearm used in the shooting was not recovered. Evidence discovered in Wills' vehicle suggested an attempt to clean up after the incident.
Moten was remembered by family and friends for his infectious smile and dedication to his loved ones. He was pursuing a career as a certified massage therapist at Dorsey College, with only six weeks remaining in his program. His death resonated deeply within the Saginaw community, which was already grappling with a surge in gun violence.
