In the early morning hours of April 16, 2023, a sense of unease settled over the 2900 block of Chesley Avenue in Northeast Baltimore. Dontre Mitchell, a 31-year-old Black male, was in the rear of the residential block when the calm was shattered by the sound of gunfire shortly before 8:40 a.m. When police arrived, they found Mitchell suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to Johns Hopkins Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
The investigation into Mitchell's death quickly revealed a chilling sequence of events. Witnesses reported seeing a suspect emerge from a red vehicle and approach Mitchell, opening fire with what appeared to be a rifle. This account was corroborated by surveillance footage that captured the harrowing incident, showing the gunman, dressed entirely in black and brandishing a large firearm, lurking outside a home moments before the shooting. After the attack, the suspect was seen fleeing the scene. The violence of that morning also left another victim; a 30-year-old woman was also shot during the incident, though details about her condition were not widely reported.
In the wake of the shooting, the Baltimore Police Department's homicide detectives took charge of the investigation. They released snippets of the surveillance footage to the public, hoping to identify the individual responsible for Mitchell's death. A substantial $8,000 reward was offered for any information that would lead to an arrest and charges in the case. Despite these efforts and the available video evidence, the search for Dontre Mitchell's killer continues. To date, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified, leaving a community searching for answers and a family grappling with a tragic loss.
