On the evening of August 4, 2023, in the Mount Clare neighborhood of Southwest Baltimore, 22-year-old Tiwan Wilson, a Black male, was shot and killed. At approximately 5:36 p.m., police responded to a report of gunfire in the 300 block of South Calhoun Street. Upon their arrival, they discovered Wilson inside a vehicle, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
The subsequent investigation into Wilson's death led Baltimore Police Department homicide detectives to identify a suspect, 36-year-old Lamont Johnson. Surveillance footage from the scene captured Johnson arriving and parking his car. The video then showed Johnson observing his wife embracing Wilson. After this, Johnson retrieved a firearm from the trunk of his vehicle, approached Wilson, and after a brief verbal exchange, shot him. At the scene of the crime, detectives recovered seven 9mm Luger shell casings.
In September 2024, Lamont Johnson was arrested on unrelated gun and drug charges. While in custody at the Central Booking Intake Facility, he was officially charged with the first-degree murder of Tiwan Wilson. Subsequently, Johnson entered a guilty plea for second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence. In August 2025, a Baltimore City Circuit Court judge sentenced Johnson to 60 years in prison, with all but 40 years suspended. As part of his sentence, Johnson is also required to undergo mental health treatment and will have to serve five years of probation upon his release. During the sentencing, Johnson offered an apology to Wilson's family, stating, 'I'm not a violent person.' Impact statements from Wilson's mother and aunt were read, expressing the deep pain his death had caused the family.
