On a late summer afternoon in Baltimore, the life of 16-year-old Bryson Sivar Hudson was tragically cut short. The male high school student was standing with a 26-year-old man outside the A Plus Grocery and Deli in the 900 block of North Broadway on August 14, 2023, when a white Nissan Maxima approached. Suddenly, occupants inside the vehicle opened fire, unleashing a hail of bullets at the storefront where Hudson and the other man were located.
Both victims were struck and rushed to nearby Johns Hopkins Hospital. While the older man survived his injuries, Hudson succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.
The investigation into the shooting painted a grim picture of the events leading up to the violence. Detectives recovered approximately 23 shell casings from at least four different firearms at the scene, indicating the intensity of the attack. They soon discovered that the white Nissan Maxima used by the assailants had been reported stolen in an armed carjacking just hours before the shooting. The methodical investigation led police to identify multiple suspects involved in the violent crime spree that culminated in Hudson's death.
Within weeks, authorities made their first arrest. In September 2023, police charged 28-year-old Christopher McLean Jr. with murder and other offenses related to the shooting. Subsequently, a second suspect, Paul Ray, who was 17 at the time of the incident, was also apprehended. Investigators linked Ray directly to the crime through DNA evidence found on the steering wheel of the stolen Nissan and on a 9mm Glock handgun that was later recovered and matched to shell casings from the scene.
The legal proceedings brought a measure of justice for Bryson Hudson's family. Paul Ray, facing a mountain of evidence, chose to plead guilty to first-degree murder, carjacking, and assault charges on October 10, 2024. In court, Ray, then 19, apologized to Hudson's family for the immense pain he had caused before a judge sentenced him to a life term, with all but 50 years suspended. The judge recommended him for a youthful offenders program. In a separate trial, a jury found the co-defendant in the case not guilty. Authorities have stated that as many as three other individuals involved in the incident have yet to be identified.
