On November 11, 1990, the body of 43-year-old Russell Lanning was found dismembered along Alligator Alley, a remote section of I-75 that traverses the Everglades between Naples and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The discovery was made in the Big Cypress National Preserve, a desolate and challenging environment that presented unique difficulties for investigators. Lanning's body had been disposed of in a manner suggesting that the perpetrator intended to hinder identification efforts.
