On the evening of Sunday, February 26, 2023, the life of a 26-year-old woman, Aliyah Marie Pérez, was tragically cut short in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Around 8:30 p.m., the sound of multiple gunshots echoed in the residential area near the 5300 block of S. 26th Street. When Milwaukee police responded to the scene, they found Aliyah with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, she succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
This act of violence, which authorities would later describe as a domestic dispute, not only silenced a vibrant young woman but also sent ripples of grief through her family and the wider community.
Aliyah was remembered by her loved ones as a unique and beautiful woman, not just on the outside but also for the compassionate and caring person she was on the inside. Known affectionately as "Lili" and "Lola," she was described as bringing an abundance of love, laughter, and light to the lives she touched. Her family, including her mother Lisa Marie Perez and her uncle, Milwaukee Common Council President José G. Pérez, were left devastated by the sudden and immense tragedy. In the days that followed, friends and family gathered for a vigil and balloon release to honor her memory, with her uncle describing her as "the brightest light."
Milwaukee police quickly identified a known suspect in connection with Aliyah's death. The man, identified as 28-year-old Elijah Combs and described by police as her ex-boyfriend, became the subject of a search. A few days later, on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, authorities located Combs in a vehicle. A police chase ensued, which ended in a crash. As officers approached, Combs died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. In the wake of this tragic outcome, Aliyah's family laid her to rest on March 6, 2023, after a Mass of Christian Burial, urging the community to be aware of the signs of domestic violence to protect other potential victims.
