Thomas Overall, a 68-year-old Caucasian male from Cleveland, Ohio, was fatally shot on May 14, 2025, while mowing his lawn in broad daylight. The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. in the West Park neighborhood on Munn Road. According to reports, Overall was engaged in routine yard work when he was suddenly attacked. Authorities arrived at the scene to find him deceased from gunshot wounds.
The suspect in the shooting was identified as 66-year-old Bryan Hurt, a neighbor of Overall.
Hurt had a history of volatile behavior and previous run-ins with law enforcement. Shortly after the murder, police discovered Hurt dead inside a vehicle on Hogsback Lane near the Stinchcomb-Groth Memorial in the Rocky River Reservation. He had apparently died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, leading investigators to classify the case as a murder-suicide.
Overall was well-known and well-liked in his community. Originally from Missouri, he had moved to Cleveland decades ago for a job opportunity and had since embraced the city as his home. He was an active member of the Cleveland Hiking Club, having logged nearly 6,000 miles with fellow hikers. He had been preparing for a two-week hiking trip to Spain, scheduled to begin just two days after his tragic death. His friends and neighbors described him as a kind-hearted and generous individual, deeply involved in his church and local activities.
The shooting has left the neighborhood in shock. Cleveland Ward 17 Councilman Charles Slife expressed his condolences, noting that Overall was a beloved figure in the community. Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb also acknowledged the tragedy during a town hall meeting, offering prayers for the victim and his neighbors. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing, though authorities have not indicated any further suspects or motives beyond the suspect’s troubled history.
