In the early evening of October 19, 2023, the life of 30-year-old Hispanic/Latino male Julio Ismael Sostre Vargas was cut short in a burst of gunfire on the Southside of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Sostre Vargas, a well-known local barber also known as "Pook The Barber," was driving his vehicle with his five-year-old son and another female passenger. As he waited at a red light at the intersection of South Layton Boulevard and West Pierce Street, a light tan or silver SUV pulled alongside his car.
Without warning, an occupant of the SUV opened fire, unleashing a barrage of bullets into Sostre Vargas's vehicle. More than a dozen shots were fired, with at least ten striking the driver's side window. Sostre Vargas was hit multiple times and was later pronounced deceased at a local hospital. His young son, seated in the car with him, was tragically struck in the face by a bullet but was reported to be in critical but stable condition. The female passenger was physically unharmed. The suspect vehicle fled the scene before authorities arrived.
The brazenness of the attack, which occurred in broad daylight at a busy intersection, sent shockwaves through the community. Family and friends remembered Julio as a loving father to his three children and a cherished member of the community with an infectious smile. Law enforcement recovered at least 15 spent cartridges from the scene and initiated an investigation into the homicide.
As of the latest available information, no arrests have been made in the case, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The Milwaukee Police Department continues to seek information from the public to help bring those responsible for the death of Julio Ismael Sostre Vargas and the serious injury of his young son to justice. The incident has highlighted the ongoing issue of gun violence in the city and has left a family and a community grieving a profound loss.
