On June 19, 2024, 17-year-old Sherrone D. Thornton Jr. was fatally shot in Milwaukee's Washington Park. The incident occurred around 8:53 p.m., shortly after the conclusion of a Juneteenth Peace Day event aimed at promoting peace among youth. A large fight involving approximately 50 young individuals preceded the shooting near the park's playground.
