On June 19, 2024, 17-year-old Sherrone D. Thornton Jr. was fatally shot in Milwaukee's Washington Park. The incident occurred around 8:53 p.m., shortly after the conclusion of a Juneteenth Peace Day event aimed at promoting peace among youth. A large fight involving approximately 50 young individuals preceded the shooting near the park's playground.
According to reports, a 17-year-old suspect, previously out on bail for a felony gun possession charge, fired a fully automatic or modified firearm indiscriminately into the crowd, striking Thornton multiple times. Thornton was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A 15-year-old boy also sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the incident.
Law enforcement swiftly responded to the scene. A Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office detective, present during the event, observed the suspect firing into the crowd. The detective discharged his weapon at the suspect but missed. The suspect fled but was apprehended shortly thereafter in a nearby alley. Authorities recovered multiple firearms from the scene, including the one used by the suspect.
In the aftermath, two teenagers were charged in connection with the shooting. Noah M. Shotwell, 15, was charged with first-degree reckless homicide as a party to a crime in Thornton's death. Shotwell admitted to being present at the scene and confessed to shooting at Thornton while he was on the ground, describing the act as a 'mistake.' Additionally, 17-year-old Onterio Girley faced multiple charges, including first-degree reckless endangering safety, for firing shots that injured Shotwell during the incident.
The tragic event has prompted community leaders and residents to call for increased efforts to address youth violence and the proliferation of firearms among teenagers in Milwaukee. Discussions are underway to enhance security measures at public events and to implement programs aimed at conflict resolution and youth engagement to prevent such incidents in the future.
