In the summer of 2024, a young man named Atem Mathiang, aged 19, traveled from his home in Michigan to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, to spend time with his cousins and aunts. His visit, however, was cut tragically short on the night of July 2nd. On that Tuesday evening, on Wisconsin Street, the male teenager was shot multiple times in what authorities have described as an unprovoked attack.
His family was devastated to learn of his death when his aunt returned home from work after 1 a.m.
The investigation into the homicide quickly led police to a person of interest. Within three hours of the shooting, an 18-year-old from Fond du Lac, Daniel Trevon Wilson, was taken into custody. According to the criminal complaint, Wilson was walking with his girlfriend and another individual when they were approached by Mathiang, who allegedly asked if they wanted to purchase drugs. After they declined, Mathiang and Wilson continued to talk. Wilson later claimed to his girlfriend that he thought Mathiang was reaching for a weapon in his waistband, although he admitted he never actually saw a gun. The only firearm recovered at the scene belonged to Wilson.
Daniel Trevon Wilson was formally charged with first-degree intentional homicide in connection with Atem Mathiang's death. During the autopsy, it was revealed that Mathiang had sustained five gunshot wounds, and investigators found six shell casings at the scene. In court, prosecutors highlighted the violent and unprovoked nature of the shooting. A judge, citing the severity of the crime and considering Wilson a flight risk, set his bond at $1 million. Wilson is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on July 25th as the legal proceedings continue.
