In the early morning hours of August 23, 2024, a violent encounter in a Milwaukee, Wisconsin apartment building claimed the life of 21-year-old Detavius Ollie. The Black / African American male was the victim of a fatal shooting that occurred around 1:40 a.m. near 19th and Forest Home Avenue. Another man, aged 35, was also wounded in the incident but was expected to survive his injuries.
The events unfolded when Trevion Carney, the 25-year-old ex-boyfriend of Ollie's girlfriend, arrived
at her second-story apartment. Carney, wearing a mask and armed with a rifle, kicked in the door. His girlfriend managed to flee down the stairs as multiple gunshots rang out. Ollie was shot 16 times as he was running away. A 35-year-old resident in the apartment below was struck by a bullet in the hand and grazed on the chest. Before succumbing to his injuries at a local hospital, Ollie identified his attacker as "Trevion".
Trevion Carney later turned himself in to the authorities. He was initially charged with first-degree intentional homicide and first-degree recklessly endangering safety. Carney ultimately pleaded guilty to lesser charges of first-degree reckless homicide and second-degree recklessly endangering safety. He admitted to kicking in the door and shooting Ollie multiple times with a rifle. Carney was sentenced to 45 years in prison, with an additional 25 years of extended supervision for his crimes.
