On the evening of October 18, 2024, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet of a Sun Prairie, Wisconsin neighborhood, leaving a young man's life tragically cut short. William Flanary, a 24-year-old male from Brookfield, was visiting family with his pregnant fiancée when the fatal encounter occurred on Martin Street. The couple, along with the woman's younger brother and their dog, were out for a walk when the shots rang out. Responding officers discovered Flanary with multiple gunshot wounds to his face, torso, and arm; he succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His fiancée sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to her chin.
For over a year, the case remained a somber mystery, casting a shadow over the community. Investigators diligently worked with limited physical evidence, turning to digital footprints to piece together the events of that tragic night. Their persistence ultimately led them to a suspect, Zachary O'Connell, age 22. A breakthrough in the investigation, more than a year after the shooting, identified O'Connell as the alleged perpetrator. He was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree intentional homicide and two counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety.
The investigation revealed a chilling narrative. Authorities allege that O'Connell, who was an acquaintance of Flanary's fiancée from high school, had used the social media application Snapchat to track her location on the day of the shooting. Surveillance footage from a nearby residence captured a suspect in an orange hoodie firing at close range before fleeing in a light-green Subaru Forester. Police were able to trace this vehicle, noting distinctive paint damage, to O'Connell's home, located just a short drive from the crime scene. A search of his residence uncovered a handgun believed to be the murder weapon. Further examination of O'Connell's digital devices reportedly uncovered derogatory remarks towards women. His parents also informed investigators of a history of violence and mental health issues. O'Connell was booked into the Dane County Jail, held on a $2 million bond.
