In the summer of 2023, a life full of promise was tragically cut short in Moore, Oklahoma. Kemaj Ali McHenry, a 16-year-old Black male, was fatally wounded in a drive-by shooting on June 25, 2023. He succumbed to his injuries the following day, leaving a community to grapple with the senselessness of youth violence. Kemaj, a student at Capitol Hill High School, was remembered for his vibrant personality and the happiness he brought to those who knew him.
The events leading to Kemaj's
death began with a planned fight arranged by one of the suspects, Mariah Hunter. Hunter, accompanied by two individuals identified as Martinez and Jarelle Johnson, arrived at the predetermined location for the confrontation. An escalation occurred when Martinez and Johnson allegedly perceived someone nearby with a firearm and opened fire. In the ensuing chaos, Kemaj was struck by multiple bullets.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the three suspects fled the scene and headed toward Oklahoma City, where they reportedly disposed of their weapons near Lake Hefner. However, law enforcement authorities acted swiftly, and all three individuals were apprehended. Mariah Hunter, Martinez, and Jarelle Johnson were subsequently arrested and faced the grave charge of murder. As of early July 2023, each was being held on a $2 million bond, with initial court appearances scheduled.
The community mourned the loss of a young life taken too soon. Funeral services for Kemaj were held on July 7, 2023, where friends and family gathered to honor his memory, wearing his favorite colors of red, white, and black as a tribute to the vibrant life he lived.
