In the late afternoon of a summer day in Norman, Oklahoma, a dispute between two drivers escalated into a fatal encounter that ended the life of 41-year-old Christian David Gurrola Martinez. On July 18, 2023, what began as an altercation on the road tragically concluded in gunfire, leaving a family and community to mourn an unexpected loss.
The incident unfolded in the 4100 block of West Main Street.
Gurrola Martinez and another individual, later identified as 62-year-old Mark Kottka, were both driving westbound when they stopped their vehicles in the roadway. An argument ensued, and during the course of the confrontation, a firearm was produced. At approximately 4:23 p.m., at least one shot was fired, striking Gurrola Martinez.
When Norman Police Department officers arrived at the scene, they found Christian David Gurrola Martinez in the roadway with an apparent gunshot wound. Officers and witnesses immediately began to render aid to him. He was then transported to a local hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The alleged shooter, Mark Kottka, remained at the location and was immediately detained by the responding officers. Following an initial investigation into the circumstances of the shooting, Kottka was arrested and booked into the Cleveland County Detention Center on a complaint of first-degree murder. The Norman Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division is continuing to investigate the incident and has asked any witnesses to come forward with information.
