In the early morning hours of a September Sunday in Claremore, Oklahoma, a relationship tragically ended with a single gunshot. Kevin Alexander Theard, a 35-year-old man, was found deceased in his home, leading to the arrest of his girlfriend, Crystal Stanfield. The events that unfolded painted a grim picture of a night fueled by alcohol and drugs, culminating in a violent confrontation.
The night before his death, Theard and Stanfield had been drinking and using cocaine.
An argument erupted between the two, reportedly after Stanfield discovered communications with another woman on Theard's phone. What transpired next would be a matter of conflicting accounts. Stanfield initially told police a harrowing tale of a suicide attempt gone wrong. She claimed that in her distress, she retrieved a handgun with the intention of taking her own life. According to her statement, Theard reached for the weapon to disarm her, and in the struggle, the gun accidentally discharged, fatally wounding him.
However, investigators at the scene began to question Stanfield's version of events. The evidence they gathered seemed to contradict her story of a struggle. Theard was found in his bed, appearing as if he were asleep. The blood evidence was consistent with him being shot while lying on his back, not in the midst of a physical altercation. The nature of the gunshot wound also raised doubts about an accidental firing during a struggle for the gun. Following the shooting, Stanfield contacted a relative, who then alerted the Claremore Police Department. When officers arrived, they found Stanfield on the front porch and subsequently took her into custody. Inside the home, they discovered Theard's body.
As the investigation progressed, authorities became more convinced that the evidence did not align with an accidental shooting. Based on the inconsistencies between Stanfield's account and the physical evidence at the scene, she was arrested and charged with the murder of Kevin Theard. The case marked the first homicide of the year in Claremore, leaving behind a trail of questions and a family to mourn the loss of a man known for his warm and easy-going nature.
