In the quiet community of Vancouver, Washington, the life of a bright-eyed 7-year-old Black / African American girl named Layla Stewart was tragically cut short. On March 12, 2023, Layla and her 27-year-old mother, Meshay Melendez, were last seen alive in the company of Melendez's ex-boyfriend, Kirkland Warren. An acquaintance later recounted to investigators the unsettling image of seeing Melendez "passed out" in the passenger seat of Warren's car that morning.
Warren then entered the acquaintance's home, took Layla, placed her in the vehicle, and drove away into a future no one could have predicted.
For days, a cloud of uncertainty hung over the family as their regular video chats with Melendez and Layla went unanswered. The family's growing concern prompted them to report the mother and daughter missing on March 18. The search came to a heartbreaking end ten days after they were last seen, on March 22, when their bodies were discovered in a rural area east of Washougal. A passerby had initially reported seeing what they believed to be two "life-size mannequins" down an embankment, a discovery that would soon reveal the grim reality of the double homicide.
The investigation swiftly pointed toward Kirkland Warren, who was already a person of interest. A court order had previously barred him from contacting Melendez due to an earlier domestic violence case. The Clark County Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed that both Layla and her mother had died from gunshot wounds to the head. Layla had sustained two bullet wounds. The scene was particularly disturbing as Layla was found naked from the waist down. Subsequent forensic analysis revealed the horrific truth of her final moments; DNA evidence collected from her body matched Warren's, indicating she had been sexually assaulted.
Kirkland Warren was arrested and faced charges for the brutal crimes. In September 2024, just days before his trial was set to begin, he pleaded guilty to the aggravated first-degree murder of Layla Stewart and the second-degree murder of Meshay Melendez. He also entered an Alford plea to a charge of first-degree child molestation, a plea in which a defendant maintains their innocence but acknowledges there is enough evidence for a conviction. Despite his claims of innocence in a pre-sentencing statement, where he concocted a story of an accidental shooting, the evidence remained undisputed. The court sentenced Kirkland Warren, then 29, to life in prison without the possibility of parole, ensuring he would never again pose a threat to the community.
