A quiet evening in an east Vancouver, Washington neighborhood was shattered by a series of violent and random home invasions that left 77-year-old Cynthia J. Vance dead. The Caucasian female victim was found deceased in her residence on July 23, 2025, from what the Clark County Medical Examiner's Office later determined to be a shotgun wound to the head.
The tragic events began to unfold around 6:15 p.m.
in the 13600 block of Northeast 22nd Street when a 43-year-old man reported that a stranger armed with a shotgun had broken into his home through a window and attacked him. The initial victim managed to escape to a neighbor's house and contact the police. As law enforcement searched the area, they discovered two more victims in a nearby home. Inside this residence, they found Cynthia J. Vance, who had been fatally shot, and an injured 74-year-old man who had been assaulted. The injured man was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation quickly led police to another nearby home where they found the suspect, 29-year-old Triston Michael McGarrah, deceased from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators believe McGarrah, a neighbor of Vance, acted alone and that the attacks were random, with no prior relationship existing between him and any of the victims. Each of the victims was inside their own residence at the time of the attacks. Due to the suspect's death, no arrests were made in connection with Vance's murder.
The motive for the violent spree remains unclear. Neighbors in the typically peaceful and quiet community expressed their shock and disbelief at the sudden and tragic events that transpired. Friends of the Vance family created a GoFundMe page to assist with funeral and travel expenses for her relatives, remembering her as a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend who enjoyed crafts, knitting, and gardening.
