On a day that should have been filled with celebration, April 1, 2023, the life of Elijah Lewis, a 23-year-old Black/African American man, was tragically cut short in Seattle, Washington. Lewis, a well-known community activist and entrepreneur, had just picked up his nine-year-old nephew to take him to a monster truck rally for the boy's birthday. While driving in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, they encountered Patrick Cooney, who was riding an electric scooter.
A minor traffic dispute
quickly escalated into a fatal road rage incident. Following a verbal exchange, Cooney, then 37, pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots into Lewis's vehicle as Lewis was attempting to drive away. One of the bullets struck Lewis in the back, inflicting a fatal wound. His young nephew, sitting in the passenger seat, was also shot, sustaining an injury to his leg but ultimately surviving the horrific event. Lewis was rushed to Harborview Medical Center, where he later died.
The investigation led to the swift arrest of Patrick Cooney. He was charged with second-degree murder for the death of Elijah Lewis and first-degree assault for the injury to his nephew. During the trial, Cooney's defense team argued that he acted in self-defense, claiming he feared Lewis was going to run him over with his car. However, prosecutors presented a different narrative, supported by security camera footage and accounts of Cooney's past instances of road rage. They argued that the shooting was an unjustified act of aggression, pointing out that Lewis was driving away when Cooney opened fire.
In February 2025, a King County jury found Patrick Cooney guilty on both counts. The verdict brought a wave of emotion for Lewis's family and the community members who had packed the courtroom throughout the trial, honoring the memory of a man known for his dedication to social justice and his work aimed at curbing gun violence. A few months later, in May 2025, a judge sentenced Cooney to 35 years in prison, bringing a close to the legal proceedings in a case that stole a beloved community leader and left a lasting scar on a family and a city.
