In the crisp autumn air of October 15, 2023, the life of 26-year-old Hispanic/Latino male Omar Daniel Garcia was tragically cut short in Yakima, Washington. The fatal encounter unfolded in the 1400 block of Roosevelt Avenue, where an argument escalated into violence. Responding to reports of gunfire, Yakima Police officers arrived to find Garcia suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite attempts to seek help from a nearby apartment, his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into Garcia's death quickly pointed to a gang-related incident. Authorities identified two suspects in connection with the shooting. The primary suspect, 22-year-old Ruben Marin, was apprehended and is believed to have been the individual who fired the shots that killed Garcia. According to detectives, the shooting was preceded by an argument between Marin and Garcia.
A second individual, 19-year-old Blayze Christopher Choquette, was also arrested. Investigators determined that Choquette allegedly drove Marin to the location of the shooting. While multiple people were reportedly in the vehicle at the time of the incident, Marin is considered the sole shooter. Both men have since been taken into custody and are facing charges related to the death of Omar Garcia. Marin faces charges of second-degree murder, drive-by shooting, and unlawful possession of a firearm. Choquette has been charged with drive-by shooting and first-degree rendering criminal assistance.
