In the quiet neighborhood of south Kennewick, Washington, the life of a 48-year-old White/Caucasian man, Travis Michael Kitchen, came to a tragic end on the morning of December 4, 2023. A father of five, Kitchen was shot multiple times around 9:30 a.m. following a brief and heated argument on the 3000 block of South Jean Street, just a short distance from his own home.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene and found him lying next to the roadway, but their efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. One of his daughters was tragically with him when he passed away.
The investigation into the shooting quickly identified a suspect: Adam Paul Klei, Kitchen's 44-year-old brother-in-law. Authorities revealed that the two men knew each other well and that the shooting was not a random act of violence. Klei, a local pharmacist, was reportedly at Kitchen's home on West 27th Avenue earlier that morning. As Klei was walking away, the two men engaged in a confrontation that ended with Klei fatally shooting Kitchen. At the time of the incident, Kitchen was in the process of divorcing Klei's sister.
Immediately following the shooting, a manhunt for Adam Paul Klei was launched by the Kennewick Police Department. A search warrant was executed at his home on West 53rd Avenue, but he was not found. However, police were able to locate and seize the vehicle he was driving at the time of the incident. The search for Klei came to a somber conclusion the following day. As police and SWAT team members closed in on his location in a ravine near South Gum Street and East 44th Avenue, Klei was found dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The case has since been characterized by authorities as a murder-suicide.
