In the early hours of September 2, 2024, a tragic event unfolded in the Renton Highlands of Washington. Merly Tahiry Herrera Moreno, a 20-year-old Hispanic woman, was the victim of a fatal drive-by shooting. The incident occurred just after 2 a.m. near the intersection of Northeast 6th Street and Shelton Avenue Northeast. Moreno was a passenger in a black Toyota Prius when she was struck by a gunshot to the chest.
In a desperate attempt to save her life, the driver of the vehicle tried
to rush her to the hospital. Along the way, they flagged down Renton police officers in the 200 block of Sunset Boulevard North. Despite the immediate medical aid administered by the officers, Moreno succumbed to her injuries at the scene. The King County Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed her death as a homicide resulting from the gunshot wound.
The Renton Police Department launched a homicide investigation into the shooting. As of late September 2024, authorities had not publicly identified any suspects or made any arrests in connection with the case. Investigators have appealed to the public for assistance, specifically requesting any video surveillance footage from the area of the shooting between 11 p.m. on September 1 and 3 a.m. on September 2. The investigation remains active as detectives continue to follow up on leads in pursuit of justice for Merly Tahiry Herrera Moreno.
