On January 14, 2023, 42-year-old Christopher Marteen was fatally shot near a McDonald's at 3554 South High Street in Columbus, Ohio. Reports indicate that Marteen was searching for his stolen vehicle when he was shot in the chest around 9 a.m. He was transported to Grant Medical Center in life-threatening condition and later succumbed to his injuries.
Following the incident, Columbus police released surveillance images of three suspects fleeing the scene and sought public assistance in identifying them. Subsequently, 14-year-old Eric Lanning was identified as the shooter. Lanning turned himself in to authorities and was charged in connection with Marteen's death.
