Tina Christine Wheeler, aged 40, tragically passed away on June 14, 2023, in Ashtabula, Ohio. Her death was the result of a shooting incident that occurred at a residence where she was reportedly living with another individual. On that fateful day, Wheeler sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. The Ashtabula County Coroner's office confirmed the cause of death as a result of gun violence.
In the aftermath of Wheeler's death, Vincent Ballard, a 24-year-old man from Conneaut, was identified as the primary suspect in the case. Ballard was involved in an attempted robbery at the location where Wheeler and her companion were present. During this incident, he shot both Wheeler and her companion, Wesley Moore. While Moore survived with non-life-threatening injuries, Wheeler succumbed to her injuries.
Ballard turned himself in to law enforcement shortly after the shooting and was subsequently arrested. He faced multiple charges, including aggravated murder, felonious assault, and aggravated robbery. Following a plea agreement, Ballard pleaded guilty to one count each of aggravated murder and felonious assault. In March 2024, he was sentenced to 28 years to life in prison for his role in the crime.
Authorities have indicated that Ballard was part of a group that approached Wheeler's residence under the pretense of purchasing drugs. The investigation into the incident revealed that there were three other individuals involved alongside Ballard; however, details regarding their identities and any potential charges against them remain less clear at this time. The Ashtabula County Sheriff's Office praised the thoroughness of the investigation that led to Ballard's conviction while noting that efforts are ongoing regarding the other suspects involved in this tragic event.
