James Cornelius "JC" "Trip" Merchant, a 28-year-old resident of Youngstown, Ohio, tragically lost his life on August 9, 2023. Initially, authorities investigated his death as a possible suicide after responding to a call about a deceased male in a car parked in the driveway of a home on Alameda Avenue on the North Side of Youngstown.
When police arrived at the scene around 8:49 a.m., they found Merchant slumped over the center console of the vehicle with a shattered driver's side window. A black handgun was discovered beside him, and a bullet shell casing was found outside the car near the driver's side. A woman at the residence reported that she and Merchant had been arguing, and he had sent her threatening text messages shortly before the incident.
However, following an autopsy performed by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's office, the case was reclassified as a homicide. The investigation led to the arrest and indictment of Keylon T. White, 29, of Salt Springs Road, Youngstown. White was charged with murder in what authorities described as a "love triangle" case.
On October 24, 2023, White was arraigned in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court, where he pleaded not guilty to the murder charge. His bond was set at $500,000, and he faced a potential sentence of 15 years to life in prison if convicted.
The case took a turn in April 2024 when White pleaded guilty to an amended charge of involuntary manslaughter. On June 14, 2024, Judge Maureen Sweeney sentenced White to eight years in prison for the shooting death of James Merchant. During the sentencing hearing, both the prosecution and the victim's family spoke about the tragic and senseless nature of the crime.
James Merchant was remembered as a 2013 East High School graduate with a passion for music and rapping, known by the name "Trip Loco." He was also an avid football player who had been a member of three championship teams in the NEOFFL. Merchant left behind three children: Javion, JayManie, and JayCeon.
