On August 24, 2023, a tragic incident unfolded in Lake Township, Ohio, approximately 15 miles outside of Akron. Melissa Gail Murphy Dunham, 42, was found dead in her Stark County home along with her husband Jason Dunham, 46, and their three children: Renee Dunham, 15, Amber Dunham, 12, and Evan Dunham, 9.
The Uniontown Police Department discovered the bodies while conducting a welfare check at the family's residence. The check was initiated after one of Melissa's coworkers reported not hearing from her for two days. Upon arrival, officers found packages at the front door and accumulated mail in the mailbox. All family vehicles were present at the property.
The incident is being investigated as a murder-suicide. According to the Stark County Coroner's Office, all five family members died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds. Chief Investigator Harry Campbell confirmed their identities and stated that they were pronounced dead at the scene at 9:52 p.m.
Uniontown Police Chief Michael Batchik revealed that Jason Dunham's handgun was used in the shooting. However, as of August 25, 2023, it was not yet determined who had fired the shots. Both Jason and Melissa Dunham had permits to carry concealed weapons.
Melissa Dunham was a prominent member of the community. She had recently been appointed as a partner at the accounting firm Bober Markey Fedorovich & Co. in Fairlawn, Ohio, where she had worked for 18 years. Melissa specialized in corporate tax returns and was known for her involvement in various community activities, including the Girl Scouts.
The tragedy deeply affected the Lake Local Schools community, where all three Dunham children were students. The school district mobilized its crisis response team to provide support and counseling to students and staff.
As of the latest available information, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been identified outside of the immediate family. The investigation is ongoing, with the Ohio Attorney General's Bureau of Criminal Investigation assisting in collecting and documenting evidence.
In the aftermath of this tragic event, the surviving family members, in collaboration with the Stark Community Foundation, have established a scholarship fund to support Lake Local Schools. The fund will provide annual scholarship assistance to graduating seniors from Lake High School, with the first scholarship set to be available for seniors graduating in 2025.
