Each family member had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, and the incident is being investigated as a quadruple homicide-suicide stemming from a domestic dispute. Investigators believe no other individuals were involved.
Melissa Dunham was a partner at the accounting firm Bober Markey Fedorovich & Co., having been appointed in June 2023 after nearly two decades with the company. She was recognized for her leadership and community involvement, including accolades such as the Woman of Professional Excellence award and the Greater Akron Chamber's "30 For the Future" award in 2019. Her children were active in local organizations: Renee participated in the Lake High School marching band and Girl Scouts; Amber was involved in band, cross country, and Girl Scouts; and Evan was a member of the Boy Scouts and enjoyed activities like baseball and solving Rubik's cubes.
The Lake Local School District, where the children attended, mobilized its crisis response team to support students and staff affected by the tragedy. Superintendent Kevin Tobin noted the profound impact on the school community, especially the band, describing the event as a "very, very tragic incident."
In the wake of this loss, the community established the Lake Community Hope Scholarship in memory of Melissa, Renee, Amber, and Evan. This scholarship aims to support graduating seniors from Lake High School who demonstrate exceptional engagement in extracurricular activities and community service, reflecting the values the Dunham family embodied.
Neighbors remembered the Dunhams fondly, with one describing Melissa as a "wonderful mother" and Jason as a "nice man, but controlling." The family had lived in their home for 18 years and were active in local scouting organizations.
As of now, authorities have not specified who fired the shots, and the investigation remains ongoing.
