On September 2, 2023, 18-year-old Jaelynn Marie Poturalski was fatally shot in the chest during a neighborhood dispute in the 200 block of Langdon Street in South Toledo, Ohio. Emergency responders transported her to Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 11:26 a.m.
Authorities arrested a 16-year-old male suspect at the scene, later identified as Nathan Mays.
Initially charged with murder in juvenile court, Mays was subsequently indicted as an adult on charges including murder, felonious assault, and discharge of a firearm on or near prohibited premises.
In August 2024, Mays entered an Alford plea to involuntary manslaughter and discharge of a firearm on or near prohibited premises. An Alford plea allows a defendant to maintain innocence while acknowledging that sufficient evidence exists for a conviction. Sentencing is scheduled for September 2024.
Born on June 25, 2005, in Toledo, Jaelynn graduated from Bowsher High School in 2023 and aspired to work with troubled youths. She was known for her fun-loving and outgoing nature, deeply cherishing her family and friends. She is survived by her father, Matthew Poturalski; brother, Kingston Poturalski; and grandparents, Lori and Butch Poturalski, and Delores and Tim McHugh.
The tragic loss of Jaelynn Poturalski has profoundly impacted her community, which continues to mourn her untimely death.
